Hello Families,

There are only two weeks left until break! We are doing a great job following this year's new protocols and routines. It is helping to keep us safe.  Thank you for all the support you are giving your child at home so we can continue to keep face-to-face instruction. In addition, our 4th graders have been doing an excellent job bringing their Chromebooks to school charged and bringing them to and from school safely. Please continue to make sure every night it is charging and before school, your child leaves each morning with the Chromebook in his/her backpack. It's still a new procedure and a bigger responsibility for 9 and 10-year-olds. Thank you for your support.

On Friday the 18th, I plan on doing a holiday party similar to our last party with snacks and a movie. It was so enjoyable and relaxing.  If you are interested in sending something in please email me. Some suggestions could be something sweet, healthy, juice, plates, and napkins. Thank you so much!

Just a reminder tomorrow is Positivity Monday! Students are encouraged to wear their positivity T-shirts. Have a terrific week:)

Here's what is going on in the classroom:

Reading:  We will work on strategies for making comparisons and contrasts in the text along with another text of a similar topic using Jan Richardson's yellow questioning strategies.

Writing: We are working on beginning the five-paragraph writing process in opinion/persuasive writing. This week's focus is on writing the introduction paragraph including the opinion statement and developing three reasons. This is a long process that will continue through January.

Math:  We will continue our study with equivalent fractions and begin lessons on comparing and ordering. I posted some helpful videos on Google Classroom.  I continue to encourage 4th graders to practice multiplication facts at home with flashcards, IXL, etc. for extra practice. Students can continue to practice IXL Diagnostic and now Khan Mappers.

Science: We are working on the Birth of Rock Unit. This unit takes the perspective that every rock has a story. Students will develop an appreciation for the processes that shape the Earth’s surface. After considering where volcanoes form and how they erupt, they turn to investigations of rocks breaking apart and creating potential hazards. Through hands-on investigation, students explore the world of rocks and design ways of protecting humans from their dangers. The plan is to finish the unit this week:)

Social Studies: This week's lessons will be in Science, not SS.  Social studies will be next week with a focus on Levels of Government.

Positivity Project: This week's focus is on, "My Words and Actions Affect Others."
