Hello,
I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday break! I certainly enjoyed my family time and getting caught up around the house. This week is the start of Trimester 2. We will be starting some new concepts in math, writing, and social studies. Below are some updates. We only have three weeks until our next holiday break. It will go fast! Have a great week. Stay healthy and Safe!
Here's what is going on in the classroom:
Reading: We will continue working on strategies for making an inference in the text using Jan Richardson's red questioning strategies.
Writing: We will do some lessons/practice/games on the 8 parts of speech and figurative language. Then we will begin reviewing the five-paragraph writing process in opinion/persuasive writing. This is a long process that will continue through January.
Math: This week we will begin our study with equivalent fractions. I posted some helpful videos in Google Classroom. I continue to encourage 4th graders to practice multiplication facts at home with flashcards, IXL, etc. for extra practice. Students can continue to practice IXL Diagnostic and now Khan Mappers.
Science: We are working on the Birth of Rock Unit. This unit takes the perspective that every rock has a story. Students will develop an appreciation for the processes that shape the Earth’s surface. After considering where volcanoes form and how they erupt, they turn to investigations of rocks breaking apart and creating potential hazards. Through hands-on investigation, students explore the world of rocks and design ways of protecting humans from their dangers.
Social Studies: We will begin the study of, "Thinking Like a Political Scientist". In this unit, students will focus on people's wants & limited and unlimited resources.
Positivity Project: This week's focus is on Kindness.
