Hello 4th Grade Families,
We had a fantastic week and our class clips made it to the floor! Each student was able to choose how they wanted to celebrate our classes' positive behavior by filling out a Google form and over 80% wanted a movie and snacks. So this Friday we will watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (old version) and have snacks. We chose this movie because I read the amazing story by Roald Dahl. Please send in any snacks and clear drink. Thank you:) Just a reminder Thursday and Friday are half days for people who still need conferences.
Here's what is going on in the classroom:
Reading: We will continue to use the V. I. P reading strategy when reading non-fiction. Students use text features, and keywords to find the main idea of these types of texts. We are also using the "Turning the Heading into a Question" strategy to help find the main idea. These strategies are intended to be added to their "reading tool kit". It's possible to use more than one at a time.
Writing: We are continuing to work on sentence structure and lessons on how to write personal narratives. They are working on different narrative writing prompts with a focus on the topic sentence, details with complete sentences (subject/predicate) including capitals and end marks. We are learning how to add transition words and a "clincher" or closing sentence as well. Most students are finishing their narrative final drafts. We are also reviewing how to write a complete sentence, fragment, and run-on sentence as well as using "million-dollar" words instead of "trash can" words.
Math: We will take the unit 2 math test on Monday. The test will be on multiplicative comparison word problems and area & perimeter. I encourage 4th graders to practice multiplication facts at home with flashcards, IXL, etc. for extra practice. As we discussed at your child's conference, any area that needs extra practice IXL Diagnostic is encouraged.
Science: We are continuing the Sound Waves Science Unit and finish this week. This unit helps students develop the idea that sound is an actual thing, a wave of vibrations traveling through the air. Equipped with this understanding, students can begin to make sense of how sound and music work.
Social Studies: Will will continue to focus on five themes of geography, the earth, and the way people interact with it this week.
Positivity Project: We are delighted to announce that our SJPS elementary schools are beginning a new journey as Positivity Project (or P2) partner schools thanks to the generosity of our St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation. This amazing character-building program will be infused into our daily class meetings and will be supported district-wide throughout the school year. All classrooms will begin our implementation on November 23rd with the character strength "gratitude". Even though the program doesn't launch until Nov. 23rd, some classes have been using parts of the program. It's been very impactful for our class meetings and discussions. This week we will focus on Bravery.
