Hello Lincoln Families,

Conferences went really well last Thursday and Friday! It was wonderful meeting everyone and setting goals for our amazing 4th graders. Thank you for all of your support and for being amazing parents! Remember students do NOT have school tomorrow. It's a curriculum planning day for teachers. Please read below the information on what's going on in our classroom. Have a great week!




Our class party will be in the afternoon, on Friday, October 30th. This year we can't have homemade treats, but only packaged items. If you are interested in sending in some treats on that day let me know. Our party is only an hour. The time frame will be from 2:00-3:00. I plan on showing a 30 minute Halloween movie, play a game, and having snacks. 

All kids are welcome to wear costumes all day.  Parents should use good judgment on costumes, maybe leaving the bulkier pieces of costumes at home.  A reminder that masks for health safety will still need to be worn and no weapons or look-alike weapons should come to school.

We intend to take a picture of each child in costume and put them together in a video that will take place of the traditional parade.  We will provide a link so families can watch this at home.

Here's what is going on in the classroom:


Reading:  The reading strategy focus this week is the retelling Who-What strategy. Students will practice reading text and write a who-what statement to retell a page or short chapter. We will also practice strategies to explain new words. These strategies are intended to be added to their "reading tool kit". It's possible to use more than one at a time.

Writing: We are continuing to work on sentence structure and lessons on how to write personal narratives. They are working on different narrative writing prompts with a focus on the topic sentence, details with complete sentences (subject/predicate) including capitals and end marks.

Math:  In math, we are focusing on Geometry concepts including, angles, lines, and perimeter of a rectangle. I encourage 4th graders to practice multiplication facts at home with flashcards, IXL, etc. for extra practice. As we discussed at your child's conference, any area that needs extra practice in IXL Diagnostic is encouraged.

Science: We are continuing the Sound Waves Science Unit. This unit helps students develop the idea that sound is an actual thing, a wave of vibrations traveling through the air. Equipped with this understanding, students can begin to make sense of how sound and music work. 

Social Studies: This week we put our Geographers hats on to think like a geographer. We will study the themes of geography, the earth, and the way people interact with it.

       Here's what is happening this next week: Just an FYI:  The testing window of NWEA and M-Step has slowed some lessons down over the last couple of weeks. Testing does interrupt our schedule.   Hello Lincoln Families, Testing for NWEA will begin Monday, April 26th in the morning. We will be testing students in reading and math.  It may take a few days to finish as a class. This week we will discuss fall and winter data and grade-level goals. Once students are finished with the NWEA, we will gather the data and adjust individual learning goals and use them along with essential standard data/goals to finish out the 4th-grade year. This is a very crucial time of year. This last trimester is going fast! There is much work that needs to be done in order to finalize 4th-grade goals to get students prepared for 5th grade. Please try your best to have your child in school. If you can schedule doctor appointments after 3:15, it would be most beneficial to your child. I don't want anyone to lose valuable lesson time.   Hello Families,      We are wrapping up the Trimester this week. Report cards will go home next week. It was exciting getting the Chromebooks last week and it will be much easier to push out assignments through Google Classroom now. Last week we worked diligently on more technology training with the new Chromebooks.  We reviewed how to take care of the devices, Digital Citizenship, how to comprise an email, and Google Classroom. If you have time and have any questions please review the  SJPS Digital Passport  (click link). This is also in Google Classroom in the topic Technology Support for students as well. We also signed up for Khan Mappers which allows math practice on 4th grade standards based off of their NWEA math score. I also went over some more programs we will use on a regular basis for face-to-face or remote learning.
